JavaScript | date.getUTCMonth() Function

The date.getUTCMonth() is an inbuilt function in JavaScript which is used to fetch the month according to universal time from a given Date object.

Syntax:

DateObj.getUTCMonth();

In the above syntax, DateObj is a valid Date object created using Date() conctructor from which we want to fetch month.

Parameters: This function does not takes any parameter. It is just used along with a Date Object from which we want to fetch months.

Return Values:
It return the months for the given date object according to universal time. Months is an integer value ranging from 0 to 11. Zero (0) means January, 1 means February and so on till 11 means December.

Below program illustrate the getUTCMonth() method:

// Here a date has been assigned according to universal
// time while creating Date object
var dateobj = new Date('October 15, 1996 23:35:32 GMT+11:00');

// Month from above date object is
// being extracted using getUTCMonth().
var B = dateobj.getUTCMonth();

// Printing month according
// to universal time.
console.log(B);

/div>

Output:

9

Errors and Exceptions:

  • Code #1: The date of the month should must lie in between 1 to 31 because none of the month have date greater than 31 that is why it returns NaN i.e, not a number because date for the month does not exist. Month shall not be existed according to universal time if the date of the month does not exists
    // Here a date has been assigned according to
    // universal time while creating Date object
    var dateobj = new Date('October 33, 1996 23:35:32 GMT+11:00');

    // Month from above date object is
    // being extracted using getUTCMonth().
    var B = dateobj.getUTCMonth();

    // Printing month according to universal time.
    console.log(B);

    Output:

    NaN
  • Code #2: If month is not given to the Date() constructor while creating a Date object, then the getUTCMonth() function returns zero (0) according to universal time. It is an exception case.
    // Here a date has been assigned according to universal
    // time while creating Date object
    var dateobj = new Date('1996 23:35:32 GMT+11:00');

    // Month from above date object is
    // being extracted using getUTCMonth().
    var B = dateobj.getUTCMonth();

    // Printing month according to universal time.
    console.log(B);

    Output:

    0
  • Code #3: If nothing as parameter is given to the Date() constructor while creating a Date object, the getUTCMonth() function returns current month according to universal time.
    // creating Date object
    var dateobj = new Date();

    // Month from above date object is
    // being extracted using getUTCMonth().
    var B = dateobj.getUTCMonth();

    // Printing current month
    // according to universal time.
    console.log(B);

    Output:

    2

Application: It has many applications such as getting current month according to universal time. Below program shows one of the application of this function. It gives the current month according the universal time.

// Here nothing has been assigned according to universal
// time while creating Date object
var dateobj = new Date();

// Month from above date object is
// being extracted using getUTCMonth().
var B = dateobj.getUTCMonth();

// Printing current month
// according to universal time.
console.log(B);

Output:

2
